Beloit Sky Carp News Release
Appleton, WI - The Beloit Snappers edged the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers by a final score of 2-1 in a pitcher's duel on Sunday afternoon. Beloit received excellent pitching from Joe DeMers, Brandon Withers, and Charlie Cerny who combined to scatter eight hits and just one run.
Joe DeMers got the start on the bump for Beloit and was marvelous throwing six strong innings to earn the no decision. DeMers scattered 5 hits in the game and only surrendered one run to keep the Timber Rattlers off balance and off the scoreboard for most of the game.
DeMers counterpart, Adam Hill, was just as strong for Wisconsin going six innings and not surrendering a run. In fact, the game would not feature a run until the Timber Rattlers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning.
For Beloit, it would take them until the eighth inning to get on the scoreboard and it was well worth the wait.
In the eighth, John Jones and Cobie Vance would lead the inning off with back-to-back singles to set the table for the top of the order.
After a sacrifice bunt from Joseph Pena that advanced the runners to second and third, Anthony Bender would throw a wild pitch to plate Jones for the Snappers first run of the game. Moments later, Ryan Gridley would pick up an RBI groundout to give the Snappers the 2-1 lead.
In the bullpen for Beloit, Withers and Cerny were absolutely magnificent firing three scoreless innings of relief. Withers was first out of the 'pen and threw one and a third innings to pick up the win for the Snappers.
Cerny would relieve Withers in the eighth with an out and two on base, but was able to work out of the jam getting two groundouts to preserve the Snappers one-run lead.
Then in the ninth, Wisconsin would not go down quietly getting two on again with one-out. However, Cerny would anchor down once more to get two more ground ball outs, a save, and secure the victory for Beloit.
The Snappers will wrap up this short road trip tomorrow in Appleton at 12:05 CT before heading back home for a 3-game set against the Quad Cities River Bandits.
Tuesday night will be Iron Country Night with Big Red and Tyler on the deck and Thursday night will be the Snappers second Bark in the Park presented by the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin. Both games are scheduled for a 6:30 P.M. first pitch.
