Lugs' 3-Game Winning Streak Halted
June 9, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lansing Lugnuts News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - Rafael Lantigua collected his second double and fourth RBI of the series, but the Lansing Lugnuts (28-33) were held to two runs on five hits in a 5-2 loss to the Lake County Captains (36-26) on Sunday afternoon at Classic Park.
The setback ended the Lugnuts' three-game winning streak, as they're now 4-2 on their 11-game, 10-day road trip that started on Tuesday in Midland.
For the first time on the road trip, the Nuts didn't score first and fell behind 4-0 after a three-run third inning against Lansing starter Josh Winckowski (Loss, 6-3). The 20-year old right-hander gave up four runs, all earned, in a two-inning span, before working five innings, while striking out eight.
Lansing managed one run against Lake County starter Luis Oviedo (Win, 6-2). They added one more run in the eighth inning off Kellen Rholl (Save, 2), but that would be it.
The Lugnuts struck out only four times during the game, but collected only one extra base hit.
After Winckowksi worked 5 innings, Marcus Reyes came in for two innings and continued his stretch of good pitching. The left-handed reliever allowed only one hit, with a strikeout and a walk. Will McAffer then came in for the eighth inning and allowed one run on two hits, with two walks and strikeouts.
In the loss, Lantigua was the lone Lugnuts batter to collect multiple hits, DJ Neal had an RBI single and walked, while Nick Podkul walked twice.
With the Lugnuts looking to win the series tomorrow night, right-hander Troy Watson (5.06 ERA) starts the series finale at 7:00 p.m. on Monday against Captains right-hander Cody Morris (3.34).
Lansing returns to Michigan's state capital for a three-game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods from June 14-16, including Star Wars Night with post-game LAFCU Fireworks on Saturday, July 15th.
