'Snakes Trade for Catcher
May 23, 2006 - American Association (AA)
St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release
St. Joseph, MO-A week and a half in to the season and bangs and bruises forced the 'Snakes to find reinforcements.
The Blacksnakes have made a trade with the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League for catcher Bryan Mulhern. New Jersey's season has not started yet so Mulhern has not played yet during the '06 season.
St. Joe gave up a player to be named later.
Over the weekend, catcher Mikaela Dworken broke a bone in his right wrist while catching in the bullpen and is likely going to placed on the disabled list shortly. That injury means that Manager Chris Carminucci was left with reliever Matt Johnson serving as backup catcher to Jefferson Infante before the trade.
"He's coming in to be our backup catcher but I anticipate that he's going to put a little heat on Jefferson Infante and I like that," says Manager Chris Carminucci. That should be good for Jefferson. He's a good catch and throw guy so he'll be good to have."
Mulhern played sparingly during the 2005 season in the Houston Astros organization. He split time between Tri-City of the NY-Penn League and Greeneville of the Appalachian League combining to hit .265 with a home run and five runs batted in over 17 games.
The Washington & Lee University product was a two-time First-Team All-ODAC performer for the Generals. During his collegiate career Mulhern played outfield, pitched and caught while posting a career .341 average with 33 doubles, 20 home runs and a school-record 130 RBI. Mulhern also went 9-4 with a 2.57 ERA in 112.0 innings of work on the mound.
Mulhern should arrive in St. Joe Wednesday afternoon and be available for Thursday's series finale.
St. Joe continues their first homestand with a three-game series beginning tonight against the Fort Worth Cats. RHP Evan Thomas (0-1) will start Tuesday night for St. Joe against RHP Kevin Hull (0-1). The homestand concludes with an 11:05am game on Wednesday and 7:05pm Thursday evening.
