St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release
The off day did nothing to slow down the Blacksnakes (5-6) offense or Jake Whitesides as they struck for five first inning runs and would never trail in a 9-6 win over Fort Worth (6-5) Tuesday night.
After Jimmy Mojica was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the first, Ben Thomas launched his second home run of the year to right field to make it 2-0. With one out, Wil Quintana doubled and scored on Cody Nowlin's single to extend it to 3-0. Then Terrell Merriman doubled to right to score Nowlin and it was 4-0. Merriman would come in to score when Jake Whitesides hit a double and it was the largest output for an inning and a 5-0 game.
But credit Fort Worth as they chipped away and starter Kevin Hull settled down. Fort Worth would score single runs in the second, third and fifth to make it 5-3.
A Blacksnake run would score in the sixth when Hull would balk in Whitesides to make it 6-3. That would prove large when Fort Worth would strike for two in the seventh and knock out starter Evan Thomas in the process.
But that would be as close as the Cats would get as St. Joe would add three in the eighth, including two on a Whitesides triple to open up a 9-5 lead. The Cats would get one in the ninth but no more.
Evan Thomas (1-1) went 6.1 innings for his first victory, allowing four earned runs. Offensively, Jake Whitesides was a home run short of the cycle, going 3-4 with a single, double and triple with three runs batted in. With two hits apiece were Ben Thomas, including a home run, Wil Quintana and Cody Nowlin. The 13 hits were a season best.
The series continues with an 11:05am Wednesday morning tilt at Phil Welch. RHP Jamie Tricoglou (1-1) will go for St. Joe, and Fort Worth counters with RHP Cory Walters (0-2). The gates open at 10am and our broadcast begins at 10:45am with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show on www.stjoeblacksnakes.com.
