Calgary Vipers News Release
Giving up all ten runs in a three inning span the Calgary Vipers were defeated 10-3 by the Strong Warriors of Maui at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. With the loss the Snakes saw their five game winning streak snapped and also split the double-header with Maui. Calgary's record is now 6-3 in the Golden Baseball League and they are one game behind the Chico Outlaws for first place in the North Division. After going ahead 3-0 in the first two innings the Vipers gave up three runs in the third, two in the fourth, and five in the fifth to fall behind for good.
Joe Sergent (1-1) took the loss for Calgary in giving up 12 hits and ten runs in four and a third innings. Donald Brandt (2-0) recorded the victory and settled down after giving up three runs on six hits in the first two innings to only allow two hits and no runs through his final four frames.
Calgary again opened the scoring in the first inning as Guillermo Reyes, and Matt Edgecombe singled, and with two outs Drew Miller knocked in a run with a base hit for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second frame both Luis Taveras and Reyes hit solo home runs for their firsts of the season and a 3-0 lead.
Maui responded in the top of the third with singles from Gered Mochizuki and Keoni Ruth followed by a three run homer from former Viper Mark Okano to tie the game a 3-3.
The Strong Warriors took the lead in the fourth inning as Rex Rundgren singled, Fehlandt Lentini walked, Mochizuki drove in a run with a base hit, and Ruth hit a sacrifice fly for a 5-3 score.
An inning later Maui broke the game wide open as in the fifth Jowen Murray-Thornton and Paul Nishimura singled, Chris Nash was intentionally walked to load the bases, Rundgren plated two with a base knock, and the pitcher Brandt smacked a three-run shot for a 10-3 lead.
Once the game was out of reach the Vipers bullpen performed well ad Berek Fasking retired the two batters he faced and both Rene Miniel and Claudio Galva threw scoreless and hitless innings.
