Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals will be welcoming a very special guest to help launch the 2010 Season presented by Canadian Tire. The ceremonial first pitch honours for the Caps first home game of the season belong to none other than Edmonton Oilers Hall Of Fame voice Rod Phillips. The Capitals will pay tribute to the veteran broadcaster who just announced his retirement and farewell tour 'Rod's Classics' where he'll call ten games in the 2010 - 11 Edmonton Oilers season to round out his illustrious career.
Phillips has spent nearly four decades bringing Oilers hockey into the lives and living rooms of Edmonton Oilers hockey fans. 'Rod's Classics' will feature ten hand-picked games that will give the voice of the Oilers an opportunity to stroll down memory lane recalling some of his career highlights and special moments in Oilers franchise history. He's been thrown a curve ball or two in his brilliant career so now it's his turn to toss one back.
The Edmonton Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment so it's only fitting one of the most beloved figures in the Edmonton Oilers family will start the season off in style. Game time versus Maui Na Koa Ikaika is 7 p.m. Don't forget, the first 2,500 fans to the Capitals Home Opener will receive a FREE Team Magnetic Schedule!
Free Hot Dog Tour Finale
The Edmonton Captials have been giving away FREE Hot Dogs for the past week, every lunch hour at various locations around the City. SONiC listeners had a chance to suggest where the final stop would be and they chose a repeat visit at the used hubcap district. The last chance to get your FREE Capital Dog before the season starts is today from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. in the SONiC parking lot. (5915 Gateway Blvd) Don't forget, SONiC Wiener Wednesdays return where you'll be able to buy those great tasting Capital Dogs for just $2 bucks!
Road Trip Recap
The Capitals return home from their season opening ten game road trip just after midnight Sunday. The team has managed a 3 - 7 record but that can be a bit deceiving. They could just as easily be coming home with the reverse record if it weren't for a hiccup here or there. The Caps have been susceptible to late stage rallies and big innings from their opponents.
However, there have been a few brightspots. Pitchers Lou Pote (0.00) and Alexander Francisco (1.49) are amongst the league leaders for ERA. Canadian Matt Rogelstad and Larry Bigbie are tied for second in the league with four doubles each. Lead-off man Tim Battle launched a home run in the Capitals first at-bat of the season. Even pitcher Mike Hrynio has a home run and is 4 for 6 in his plate appearances so far. There'll be more long balls and some exciting, professional baseball action starting at TELUS Field this Tuesday. Capitals season seats start at under $9 per game and individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, at (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
Roster Moves
Capitals Manager Brent Bowers pulled the trigger on a few roster moves right before the team left Utah to head for home. Rookie Ricky Valdez and right handed pitcher Armando Carrasco were released. Lanky left-hander Jamie Arneson will re-join the team in Edmonton. The 6 foot 5 pitcher from Bakersfield, CA started with the team in training camp in Tucson but was assigned to Medicine Hat of the WMBL. The Caps 22 man roster will have 3 countries represented including two Canadian provinces. There are also players from ten different States in the USA. There are four players with Major League Experience, another four players with AAA experience. It's also a large roster with fifteen players 6 foot 2 or taller!
