Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers used three pitchers to shutout the Strong Warriors of Maui 4-0 in the first half of a double-header at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. With the victory the Snakes have now won five straight games and improve to 6-2 on the Golden Baseball League season. Jay Broughton (2-0) got the start and threw five and a third innings scoreless while giving up only three hits and striking out three for the win. Daniel Chaffardet struck out one in his one-third of an inning and Brian Oliver (1) recorded the save by leaving two runners in scoring position in the sixth inning and posting a one-two-three seventh inning including two strikeouts.

At the plate Calgary was led by a trio of players including Drew Miller, Guillermo Reyes, and Luis Taveras. Miller went three-for-three with two runs batted in, Reyes was three-for-four and played excellent defensively while Taveras was two-for-three with a run scored and batted in.

In the top of the first inning Maui loaded the bases but with one out shortstop Reyes made a diving catch to avoid any runs to score.

Calgary took advantage of the great defensive play in the bottom of the frame as Jorge Mejia was hit by a pitch, Matt Edgecombe singled, Julio Ramirez walked to load the bases, and Miller drove in two runs with a base hit for a 2-0 lead.

A run was added by the Vipers in the third as Ramirez and Miller singled followed by a two-out run batted in base hit from Taveras for a 3-0 advantage.

Another run was added in the sixth inning as Taveras singled, Brian Oliver sacrificed him to second base, and Reyes scored him with a RBI double for a 4-0 score.

Game 2 of this double-header will start in 30 minutes and will feature two lefties as the Vipers' Joe Sergent (1-0) takes on Maui's Donald Brandt (1-0).
