Snakes Spilt Double-Header

The Calgary Vipers picked up a spilt in their double-header with a 9-5 victory over the Orange County Flyers at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, California. The Vipers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but Orange County tied the game up before two straight three run innings by Calgary in the fifth and sixth put the game away. With the victory the Snakes snap a three game losing streak and improve to 9-5 on the second half of the season.

In the top of the first inning Nelson Castro walked, Carlos Duncan singled Castro to third base, and Felix Jose made the score 1-0 with a sacrifice fly.

An inning later Colin Moro singled and was followed by Jorge Mejia's seventh homerun of the season for a 3-0 Calgary lead.

Orange County made it a one run game in the bottom of the second as they loaded the bases with a Fernando Pacheco walk, Buddy Morales single, and Marcus Crockett base on balls. Travon Jackson knocked in two runs with a base hit for the 3-2 score.

The Flyers tied the game at three in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a Crockett bunt single, Gabe Mayorga sacrifice bunt, and a Jeff Van Houten run batted in single.

Calgary regained their three run lead in the next half inning as they loaded the bases with a Castro single, Felix Jose intentional walk, and Patrick Arlis free pass. With two outs Jorge Tang cashed a run with a infield single and Moro plated two more tallies with a base knock.

Three more runs were added to the lead in the top of the sixth inning with a Mejia bunt single, Darryl Brinkley reaching on an error by shortstop Mayorga, both Castro and Duncan reaching on fielder's choices, and Jose smacking a three run blast for his 13th homerun of the year and the 9-3 advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh frame Travon Jackson led off with a bunt single and after a wild pitch he scored on a Van Houten RBI single. Van Houten went from first to third base on a throwing error by catcher Arlis and scored to close off the night at 9-5 on a Jermy Acey RBI groundout.

Jon Huizinga (4-2) picked up the victory out of the bullpen going three and a third innings and allowing one earned run while striking out four.

After a day off the two teams will play another double-header on Wednesday July 30th starting at 6:05 PM (MDT) to conclude the four game series.

The Vipers have a big weekend planned against their arch-rival Edmonton Cracker-Cats when they return to Foothills Stadium on August 1st at 7:05 PM (MDT). Friday night will be Vipers Key Chain Giveaway Night with the first 1500 fans receiving that gift. Saturday the Vipers and Calgary Stampeders are teaming up for a baseball-football doubleheader. The baseball game begins at 2:30 PM (MDT) and starting at 4.00 PM (MDT) football fans will receive free admission by presenting their Stamps-Riders ticket. Vipers fans will be allowed to park free on Vipers property if they chose to move their vehicles from the McMahon Stadium lot starting at 4:00 PM (MDT).
