July 29, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Chico Outlaws News Release

RENO, NV - The Chico Outlaws nearly snatched victory out of the jaws of defeat, wiping out a four run decifit in the 9th and send their game with Reno in extra innings...but the Silver Sox plated the game winner in the bottom of the 10th to escape with a 7-6 win in the opener of a five game series Monday night at Peccole Park on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

The Outlaws came into the contest fresh off their four-game series sweep of the Silver Sox in Chico...but the Silver Sox took control of Monday night's game early, scoring four in the 1st inning off starting pitcher Jason Roach - John Hattig singled home Carlos Madrid to put Reno on the board...Ross McCoy followed with an RBI double...Hattig scored from third on a wild pitch and D.J. Dixon knocked in McCoy with a groundout to first. Chico made it 4-1 with a run in the 2nd - Jose Valdez doubled and came home on a Bryan Silverman groundout. The Silver Sox answered back in the 3rd when Adam Geery singled home McCoy to make the score 5-1. Reno starter Jesse Hall was sharp, holding the Outlaws to just three hits through the first six innings and during one stretch retired nine straight Chico batters.

Tony Torcato's two-out single in the 7th drove home Valdez to whittle the Silver Sox lead to three...but in the 8th Madrid doubled home Gary Harris to put Reno up 6-2. Mitch Arnold came on to try to get the final three outs in the 9th, but with their backs to the wall, the Outlaws offense came alive - Casey Garrison led off the inning with a base hit and went to second when Valdez walked. A groundout by Julian Benavidez moved the runners up...then with pinch-hitter Gabe Riley at the plate, Arnold balked home Garrison. Riley then dunked a single to center to plate Valdez to make it 6-4...and Shane Cronin capped off the rally with a two-out, pinch-hit homer to left to knot up the contest at six apiece. In the 10th Arnold retired the Outlaws in order...then in the bottom of the 10th Harris led off the inning with a double by Harris. A sacrifice bunt moved Harris - the potential winning run - to 3rd base, so Chico manager Jon Macalutas ordered both Senreiso and Hattig to be walked intentionally to load the bases. Todd Gelatka came in from the Outlaws bullpen to face pinch-hitter Ryan Brown...but his second pitch sailed past the catcher Cronin and to the backstop, allowing Harris to score from third and give the Silver Sox the win and snap Chico's season-best four game winning streak.

Arnold (1-0), though blowing Reno's lead in the 9th, picked up the win...Rob Ellis (2-4), the third of four pitcher used by Chico on the night, took the loss. The Silver Sox piled up 13 hits, with Harris and McCoy banging out three apiece...Madrid and Hattig each adding two safeties. The Outlaws had just seven hits, with no one in the Chico line-up posting a multi-hit game. With the loss, the Outlaws drop to 4-8 in the second half and 19-35 on the year...Reno improves to 4-6 in the second half and 22-32 for the season. The two teams meet Tuesday in a doubleheader at Peccole Park...right-handers Eric Sheridan (0-1, 1-3 overall) and Berek Fasking (1-3) will be the starting pitchers for Chico. Game time is 5:05... hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
