Snakes Break Open Game Late

The Calgary Vipers scored five runs in their final two at-bats to break open a tie game and defeat the Victoria Seals 8-4 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh Calgary scored twice and added three more for good measure in the eighth to pick up their fourth straight victory. The turning point of the game came in the top of the seventh after the Seals had tied the game and had the bases loaded with one out. In entered Todd Moser (2-0) who struck out one and got a pop-up to get out of the inning without giving up a run and protecting the tie game. For his efforts Moser recorded the victory. With the win the Vipers are 15-7 in the second half and lead the division by three and a half games. The Snakes are also 41-20 overall for the top mark in the Golden Baseball League.

Pete Sikaras was solid out of the bullpen entering the game in the eighth inning and preserving a one-run league by not giving up a run and striking out one. Brian Oliver pitched a scoreless ninth inning while recording a strikeout. Evan Greusel started the game for the Vipers and threw five inning while giving up two runs and not walking a batter. Aaron Trolia (1-3) took the loss, was ejected from the game, and gave up five runs in six innings.

At the plate several Vipers had big nights led by Caonabo Cosme who was three-for-three with two runs scored and a walk. Colin Moro collected three runs batted in, Nelson Castro scored three runs, Jorge Mejia collected three hits, and Kit Pellow walked three times.

Victoria opened the scoring right away in the top of the first inning as Wilver Perez doubled and Jamar Hill collected a run batted in single for a 1-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the third Cosme led off the inning with a single, both Castro and Pellow walked to load the bases, and Moro clutched up with two outs and delivered a two-run base hit to give the Vipers a 2-1 lead.

The Seals answered right back in the next half inning as Brett Flowers doubled, Gabriel Riley reached on a fielder's choice, stole second base, and scored on a Bret Levier RBI single for a 2-2 tie.

The Snakes grabbed the lead back at 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth as Castro walked, stole second base, and scored on a Pellow RBI single.

In the top of the seventh frame Victoria tied the game at 3-3 as Perez and Sergio Pedroza singled followed by Hill who plated a run with a sacrifice fly.

Calgary took their third lead of the game in the bottom of the inning as Mejia executed a perfect drag bunt, Pellow walked, Moro cashed the go-ahead run with a single, and Pellow scored for a 5-3 advantage when the Vipers hit into a double-play.

The Seals got within a run at 5-4 in the top of the eighth as Riley doubled, Levier singled, and Perez knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Three runs were added to the lead by the Snakes in the bottom of the frame for a 8-4 lead as Cosme doubled, Fehlandt Lentini was intentionally walked, Castro tripled in both to tie for the league lead with six three-baggers on the season, and Mejia plated a final tally with a RBI single.

This series against the Seals continues on Saturday August 15th at 5:05 PM MDT and Sunday August 16th at 1:35 PM MDT. On Saturday it will be "Cannons Day" at the ballpark where the Vipers will be donning special throwback Calgary Cannons jerseys which will be auctioned off after the game. On Sunday it is "Japanese Day" at the stadium where fans will be able to compete in sumo suits during the game, make origami, and Japanese calligraphy will be shown on the Jumbotron. Following the game fans will be able to go out on the field to meet the three Japanese players and get autographs, play catch, and run the bases. Reggie Rivard (3-3, 4.88) and Erik Dessau (6-3, 5.96) will take to the mound for Calgary for the two games.

For the third straight year the Vipers have qualified for the playoffs and will host Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series on Friday September 4th at 7:05 PM MDT. If necessary Games 4 & 5 will be held on Saturday September 5th at 4:00 PM MDT and Sunday September 6th at 3:00 PM MDT also at Foothills Stadium.
