August 1, 2013 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons squandered another tremendous outing by starter Scott Snodgress, falling in walk-off fashion to the Tennessee Smokies in front of 2,609 fans at Smokies Park.
In a matchup between two of the best pitchers in the Southern League, Snodgress the league leader in wins and Hendricks the leader in ERA, both players lives up to the billing trading zeroes over the first three frames. The Barons would break through in the fourth on an RBI single by Luis Sierra, scoring Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs had reached earlier in the inning on a double, extending his hitting streak to 15 games since joining the Barons.
Snodgress continued his recent string of dominant performances, allowing just one hit over the first 6.0 innings and extending his scoreless inning streak to 24.2 innings dating back to July 10th. The streak would end in the 7th, when Justin Bour swatted a solo home run to right field, tying the game at 1-1. He would finish the day with a run and three hits allowed over 8.0 innings. Hendricks would take a no-decision in the game allowing a run on seven hits while striking out four over 6.0 IP.
With Snodgress out of the game, Smokies would load the bases in the ninth and walk-off with a series victory thanks to an infield single by John Andreoli against reliever Dan Remenowsky (0-2, 4.86). With the win, the Smokies improved to 58-50 and 24-15 in the second half. Meanwhile, the Barons fell to 67-43 and 23-17 in the second half while falling 1.5 games behind the Smokies in the North Division second half standings.
The Barons return to Regions Field Friday to begin a five game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
