Knoxville Smokies News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - The Tennessee Smokies (4-3) went to extra innings for the first time this season and outlasted the Montgomery Biscuits (4-3) in 10 innings, 3-2. Tennessee's bullpen was phenomenal and delivered seven scoreless innings to keep the game tied and ultimately clinch the victory. The win snapped a two-game losing skid and keeps the Smokies one game out of first place in the Southern League's North Division.
In the top of the 10th, Luis Vazquez advanced the ghost runner Delvin Zinn to third with a sacrifice bunt. Then, Bryce Windham lifted a sacrifice fly to left which scored Zinn and pushed the Smokies ahead 3-2.
Tennessee's bullpen was the star of the night. Four pitchers combined for seven scoreless innings and 12 strikeouts. Brandon Hughes struck out five Biscuits over two and one-third hitless innings.
Bryan Hudson (3-0) earned his team-leading third win of the season with three clean innings of work and four strikeouts. Scott Kobos notched his second save of the season and closed the door on the Biscuits with a perfect 10th inning.
The Smokies struck first on offense and scored four batters into the game. Leadoff hitter Darius Hill drilled a game-opening double. Three batters later, Bryce Ball knocked his team-high fifth double of the season to score Hill and put Tennessee ahead 1-0.
The Smokies extended their lead to 2-0 in the second. Vazquez reached on a Montgomery error and later scored on an RBI single from Hill.
The Biscuits tied the game in the third on a two-run home run from Evan Edwards. In the sixth, Montgomery had an opportunity to take the lead. After a one-out double, Blake Hunt singled to right field where Tennessee's Nelson Velazquez was waiting. Velazquez fired a strike to the plate and cut down the runner to preserve the 2-2 tie which held until the 10th.
Offensively, Hill was the lone Smokie with multiple hits. He finished 2-for-5 with a double and RBI. Hill has now reached safely in each of the Smokies' first seven games, the only Tennessee batter to do so.
Tennessee and Montgomery have split the first four games of the series with two wins apiece. Game five of the six-game series between the Smokies and Biscuits is Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. ET. Tennessee's Riley Thompson (0-0, 6.00 ERA) makes his second start of the season and faces Montgomery's Ian Seymour (0-1, 19.29 ERA).
