Knoxville Smokies News Release
Sevierville, Tenn. - Kevan Burns hit a fourth inning grand slam and Bucky Jacobsen launched a solo shot in the fifth, leading Tennessee (16-9) to a 7-4 win against Orlando Tuesday afternoon at Smokies Park. With the win Tennessee swept Orlando and ran its season high win streak to five games.
Burns' grand slam was his first home run of the season and capped a five run fourth inning. Tennessee loaded the bases and scored its first run on two walks, a single, and an error on center fielder Amado German.
Smokies starter Jeremy Cummings moved to 3-2 on the season by allowing one run over five innings, and Mike Lyons earned his league leading 11th save. The Rays Jose Veras (0-3) surrendered five runs in 3 2/3 innings in the loss.
Rick Ankiel walked two batters, threw two wild pitches, and allowed a hit as part of a two run seventh inning, allowing Orlando to sneak back. B.R. Cook, Jason Pearson, and Lyons retired the final seven batters to end the game.
The Smokies face the University of Tennessee Volunteers in the Second Annual Tennessee Classic Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. The game will be a rematch of last season's first ever meeting of the two programs and feature a pre-game home run derby. The Smokies captured the inaugural Tennessee Classic with a 5-4 win over the Vols on a walk off home run from Paul Chiaffredo before 4,215 fans at Smokies Park.
