JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â- The Suns took advantage of three errors and beat the Birmingham Barons, 6-1, on Tuesday in front of 3,543 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The Barons (11-14) scored their lone run off Suns starter Joel Hanrahan when Darron Ingram homered to lead off the second inning. Hanrahan (4-1) earned the victory, pitching six innings and striking out six.
The Suns (14-12) won their sixth game in their last seven and overcame the early deficit in the third inning when Nick Alvarez singled home two runs to give Jacksonville a 2-1 lead. Tarrik Brock followed with an RBI single.
On three errors, the Suns put runners at second and third with no outs in the fourth inning off Barons starter Jim Bullard. Reggie Abercrombie lofted a sacrifice fly and Mike Collins drove in a run on one of his three singles to give the Suns a 5-1 advantage. Bullard (0-1) earned the loss, pitching four innings in a spot start.
In the fifth inning, Victor Diaz scored on a wild pitch by reliever Matt Smith to complete the scoring. The Suns won three of four games from the defending Southern League champion Barons.
Three Suns pitchers â Nathan Ruhl, Greg Bauer and Will McCrotty â each pitched a scoreless inning to preserve the lead.
Suns right-hander Tom Farmer (0-1, 2.55 ERA) is scheduled to start against Carolina Mudcats lefty Todd Moser, who is making his double-A debut at 7:05 p.m. Thursday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Both teams are off Wednesday as part of a league-wide off-day.
