BayBears fall in series finale
April 29, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Mobile BayBears News Release
Chattanooga, Ten. â The Mobile BayBears had opportunities but could not capitalize Tuesday night as they fell to the Lookouts, 6-2, in their series finale. Mobile had the bases loaded with no one out in the top of the second, but scored only once. Chattanooga, on the other hand, scored two runs of their own in their half of the seventh with a two-out, bases-loaded single, to put the game away.
The BayBears collected three straight singles to lead off the top of the second inning, and after pitcher Steve Watkins struck out, Todd Donovan followed with another single scoring one. But Lookouts starter, John Koronka, struck out Bobby Scales and Khalil Greene flew out to the base of the right field wall to end the Mobile threat.
Watkins then gave up three runs in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly and a two-run homerun by Reed Secrist, giving Chattanooga a 4-1 lead. Watkins (1-2) would take the loss allowing four runs on seven base hits in five innings of work.
Scales hit his first homerun of the season in the top of the seventh, a solo shot, shrinking the lead to 4-2. But the Lookouts answered right back with the two runs in the bottom half of the frame off of reliever Chris Oxspring.
The BayBears have Wednesday off as they travel to Greenville to open a four-game series against the Braves beginning Thursday night. RHP Brad Baker (0-2; 5.40) will get the start on the mound for Mobile.
