August 1, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Knoxville Smokies News Release
Sevierville, Tenn. - Tennessee (24-15, 59-50) opened an eight game homestand with a double-header split with Orlando. The O-Rays used a two-hit complete game shutout from Jose Veras to win game one 1-0, while the Smokies got a game winning two-out single from Scott Krause to win game two 2-1. Tennessee delivered three consecutive two out singles against Josh Parker (L, 0-3), including the game winner from Krause that drove home Papo Bolivar
In game one, the Smokies recorded their first run in the fourth inning when Krause came home from second on a Dan Moylan double to put the Smokies up 1-0. B.J. Barns scored on a double by Shawn Riggans to even the score 1-1 in the fifth inning.
The Smokies fell behind in the first game in the third inning when Juan Salas scored on a base hit by John-Paul Davis against Julio Villalon (L, 4-3). That one run was all Orlando would need as Jose Veras held the Smokies scoreless on two hits in his first complete game of the season.
The Smokies will host the third game of the series against the Rays on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. at Smokies Park. Tennessee will send Juan Pena to the mound to face Orlando newcomer Jason Cromer in the third of an eight game home stand.
