Suns' bullpen maintains lead in 2-1 win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Suns held its one-run lead from the first inning forward in a 2-1 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts in front of 6,368 fans Friday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

The Lookouts (49-61 overall, 17-23 second half) opened the ballgame with three consecutive singles off Suns starter Edwin Jackson. He worked out of the jam, allowing one run on a wild pitch before retiring the next three hitters in a row. Jackson (6-6) earned the victory, pitching 6-1/3 innings and striking out eight, boosting his league-leading total to 128.

The Suns combated with two runs and four singles in the bottom of the first inning off Lookouts starter John Koronka. Tarrik Brock singled home Nick Theodorou and Nick Alvarez lofted a sacrifice fly, scoring Reggie Abercrombie. Koronka (7-11) earned the loss, scattering nine hits over seven innings.

After Jackson left in the seventh, the Suns' bullpen took over. Lino Urdaneta retired two consecutive hitters after coming on with a runner at first with one out. He pitched a scoreless eighth to lead up to closer Jason Frasor who delivered a scoreless ninth for his 10th save in 10 opportunities with the Suns.

The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for the Suns (50-59, 19-21).

Right-hander Will McCrotty (1-3, 4.31 ERA) is scheduled to face Lookouts righty Travis Thompson (2-0, 2.08) at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

SUNS SPOTS: The Suns were thrown out five times on the basepaths Friday, including thrice being picked off by Koronka. ...The Suns were involved in their 12th game decided by one or two runs among their last 13 contests. ...The Suns' bullpen had allowed 26 earned runs over 26 innings over the team's previous 11 games.
