Zach Cates (W, 2-1) collected his second win as a Smokie after throwing two scoreless innings of relief, only giving up one hit while striking out one batter in his winning effort.
Justin Nicolino (L, 8-3) took the loss for the first time since April 12th after allowing seven runs (one earned) on six hits in 4.2 innings of work while finishing with three walks and two strikeouts. It's the first time this season that Nicolino has walked more than two batters.
Frankie Reed surrendered two runs (both earned) on five hits in his 1.1 innings of relief, striking out two Smokies while not issuing a walk in his Sunday afternoon outing.
Jheyson Manzueta gave up four runs (all earned) on two hits while walking two batters and striking out one in his 0.2 innings.
Greg Nappo allowed one run (earned) on two hits in his 1.1 innings of work, striking out a pair of batters along the way.
The Smokies got on the scoreboard first, grabbing a run on Christian Villanueva's sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Jacksonville used some two-out magic to tie the game and ultimately take the lead with a four-run top of the third inning. The Suns tied the game at 1-1 on J.T. Realmuto's opposite field RBI single and took the lead on Joe Benson's (HR, 8) team-leading eighth homer of the year, a three-run shot to left to put the Suns in front 4-1.
Tennessee later responded with a huge seven-run bottom of the fifth. The Smokies received an RBI double from Elliot Soto, a RBI groundout from Stephen Bruno, a two-run homer from Jorge Soler (HR, 4), a two-run double from Anthony and a RBI double from Dustin Geiger to give the Smokies an 8-4 lead after five innings of play.
The Suns drew two runs closer in the top of the sixth inning. A two-run double from Ryan Rieger cut the lead from four to two, with Tennessee holding an 8-6 lead following the completion of the top of the sixth inning.
The Smokies got one of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth, as Christian Villanueva's two-out RBI single made it a 9-6 Tennessee lead after six innings of play.
Jacksonville remained undeterred, scoring twice to cut Tennessee's lead to one in the top of the seventh. A J.T. Realmuto RBI double and an Austin Barnes sacrifice fly made it a 9-8 ballgame with the Smokies holding on to that one-run edge.
But the Smokies added right back to their lead with a five-run bottom of the seventh inning. A two-run single from Stephen Bruno and a three-run homer from Jorge Soler (HR, 5) put the Smokies up 14-8. All five runs in the inning came with two outs.
The Suns and Smokies will be back at it on Monday for the series finale, with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m. ET. The Suns will send out right-hander Jose Urena (6-7, 4.14) while the Smokies will counter with lefty Jeffry Antigua (0-1, 2.45).
