
M-Braves Force Extra Innings, Fall 8-7 in 10 Frames

PEARL, MS -- The Mississippi Braves plated four runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings at Trustmark Park Sunday night, but the Mobile BayBears scored on a wild pitch in the 10th to claim an 8-7 victory. With the win, Mobile evened the series at two games apiece. With the loss, the Braves fall one game behind the BayBears in the Southern League South Division standings. The series finale is slated for 7:00 PM Monday.
Mississippi (14-10, 53-40) scored seven runs on 15 hits while Mobile (15-9, 57-36) scored eight runs on 20 hits. The two teams combined to record 35 hits in the game, tying the M-Braves record which was set on June 17, 2010, at Carolina.
The Braves entered the ninth trailing 7-3. Daniel Castro singled and Kyle Wren doubled to center field, breaking a 0-15, four-game stretch. Nunez then delivered a two-run double to left, cutting the BayBears lead to 7-5. Matt Kennelly followed with a RBI-single to make it 7-6. Cedric Hunter drew a two-out walk to put runners at first and second before Barrett Kleinknecht's game-tying hit to center field.
Jake Lamb led off the top of the 10th with a base hit to right. Zach Borenstein doubled to put runners at second and third with one out. With two outs, Lamb came in to score what turned out to be the winning run on a Ryne Harper wild pitch. Mark Thomas struck out to end the frame.
Kaleb Fleck (3-3) tossed one-third of an inning and picked up the win despite blowing a save opportunity. RJ Hively (S, 2) came on in the 10th to record his second save. Ryne Harper (6-4) surrendered the loss in the 10th.
The scoring began early as the M-Braves jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Mycal Jones doubled and took third on Gustavo Nunez's sacrifice bunt. Kleinknecht then delivered a RBI-single to right field to plate the game's first run.
Borenstein singled to start the BayBears' half of the fourth. Thomas followed with a two-run homers to left field, giving Mobile a 2-1 advantage.
Kleinknecht led off the bottom of the frame with a single to center before coming in to score the tying run on Kyle Kubitza's double to center field.
Mobile regained the lead in the sixth. Gerson Montilla and Thomas reached on back-to-back singles to start the inning. Evan Marzilli followed with a RBI-single to make it a 3-2 game. Mike Lee then delivered a single to center, scoring Thomas and extending the BayBears lead to 4-2.
Montilla walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Marzilli followed with another RBI-single to extend Mobile's lead to 5-2. After a quick pitching change, Sean Jamieson delivered a two-run triple to make it 7-2.
Kennelly doubled and Hunter singled to start the bottom of the eighth. Kleinknecht then grounded into a double play, allowing Kennelly to score on the play and cut the BayBears lead to 7-3.
Neither starter factored in the decision. Lee (7-4) worked six frames for the BayBears, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and a walk while fanning two batters. For the Braves, Ryan Weber (3-4) gave up four earned runs on 13 hits and one home run. He struck out four batters.
In Monday night's series finale at Trustmark Park, M-Braves right-hander Mitch Atkins (4-0, 4.17) takes the hill against BayBears righty Willy Paredes (4-2, 2.47). First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
