KODAK, Tenn- The Tennessee Smokies have won three straight with a 5-4 win on Friday night at Smokies Stadium. Tennessee had a lead in the middle innings, but a Birmingham rally made it a one run ballgame in the final three frames. The Smokies bullpen held on to win the ninth one run ball game against Birmingham in the last ten meetings.
The Barons scored first on a solo home run by Bryan Romos in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Smokies lit it up in the fourth inning with a five run frame. Haydn McGeary smashed his ninth home run in Double-A with a bullet to left field, taking a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Jordan Nwogu laced a ball to left field for a three run home run to break the ballgame wide open to a 5-1 Smokies lead.
The Barons made the ballgame tight in the sixth inning with a three run frame. Xavier Fernandez doubled off the left field wall to make it 5-2. The next batter Taylor Snyder singled on the infield to score another run. Terrell Tatum scored the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-4 ballgame.
Smokies reliever Porter Hodge came into the ballgame and tossed two scoreless frames with two strikeouts to keep it 5-4 heading into the ninth. Smokies closer Danis Correa struckout the side in order in the ninth inning to preserve the 5-4 victory.
