Mississippi Braves News Release

GREENVILLE, SC -- A ninth inning rally fell a hit short as the Tennessee Smokies used five pitchers in route to a third straight victory over the Greenville Braves. Smokies starter Jeremy Cummings (8-6) scattered four hits over 6.2 innings of work to pick up the win Tuesday night at Greenville Municipal Stadium in front of 3,181 fans.

The Smokies got on the board first in the second inning after Papo Bolivar drew a walk from G-Braves starter Adam Wainwright (5-5), and Corey Erickson followed with a double to left to put runners at second and third. Catcher Yadier Molina brought in Bolivar with a groundout to first, and Chris Weekly slapped a single to center to make the score 2-0.

Tennessee tacked on two more in the third on a Bolivar single that brought in Skip Schumaker and Caonabo Cosme.

In the bottom half of the third frame, the G-Braves were able to push a run across the plate for the first time in 25 innings. Kelly Johnson and Bryce Terveen hit back-to-back singles, and a Wainwright sacrifice bunt put runners at first and second. Richard Lewis sent a grounder to second to get the RBI. Terveen scored a batter later on a wild pitch.

The score remain 4-2 until the G-Braves attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of ninth. With one out, Johnson cut the lead in half with an RBI double off of the left field wall that brought Cory Aldridge home. Reliever Juan Figueroa then plunked Terveen, but the rally would stall as pinch hitter Pete Orr popped out to second base and Lewis struck out to end the game.

Aldridge and Johnson each went 2-3 in the loss.
