
BayBears second half streak ends

Mobile, Ala. â The Mobile BayBears streak of five to begin the second half came to an end Monday night as they fell to Birmingham 4-3, before 1,631 fans at Hank Aaron Stadium. BayBears starter Chris Rojas was the tough luck loser. Rojas (3-6) allowed only one run on just two hits while striking out six in his six innings of work.
The BayBears' bats wre locked up by Barons starter Neal Cotts. The left-hander did not give up a hit until Jake Gautreau's lead off single in the fourth.
Birmingham scored a single run in the top of the fourth on an infield groundout by former BayBear, Gabe Alvarez. They added three more tallies in the seventh off of reliever Alan Webb. The inning featured two triples, two wild pitches and a hit batsman.
Mobile closed the gap with two runs in the seventh. Todd Donovan crossed the plate on a on an infield groundout by Rico Washington and Jake Gautreau scored on a wild pitch. The BayBears trimmed the lead to 4-3 in the eighth as Humberto Quintero drove in Danny Bravo on a grounder to short. Mobile had runners at the corners with one out, however Donovan hit a smash right at shortstop Guillermo Reyes who turned a double play to get the Barons out of the jam.
The series finale will be Tuesday night at 7:05. LHP Cory Stewart (7-4; 3.10) will get the start on the mound for the BayBears.
The Saints caravan will be at Hank Aaron Stadium Tuesday. Saints players and Coach Jim Haslett will be taking batting practice with the BayBears and signing autographs for the fans in the concourse.
