Knoxville Smokies News Release
Jacksonville, Fla. - Despite having allowed 80 hits over the last seven games, the Tennessee pitching returned to form by allowing one run on two hits in a 2-1 win over Jacksonville (60-67, 29-29) Tuesday night to earn a series split. Tennessee (67-60, 32-25) extended its division lead over the third place Suns to 3 ½ games, with second place Carolina already qualified for the post season.
Pat Colllins (1-1) allowed one hit in the second inning, and the Suns didn't single again until the ninth. Jason Repko reached on a Chris Weekly error in the first, advance to second on a single by Franklin Gutierrez, and moved to third on a fielder's choice by Reggie Abercrombie. In an attempt to pick off Abercrombie, Collins committed the Smokies second error of the inning by overthrowing first, allowing Repko to score the Suns only run.
Tennessee answered in the second inning. Bucky Jasobsen - who saw his three game home run streak come to an end - singled against Heath Totten (10-11) and advanced on an error by Abercrombie. Chris Duncan flied out to left field, allowing Jacobsen to hustle to third. Caonabo Cosme singled home Jacobsen to tie the game at one. Cosme went from first to third on a single by Shaun Boyd and scored on a single by Weekly.
Neither team would score the rest of the way. Tyler Johnson relieved Collins and worked two scoreless innings, while Josh Kinney struck out the side - all looking - in the eighth. Mike Lyons picked up his league best 31st save in the 9th, but not without some drama.
Pinch hitter Tarrick Brock reached on a two out pinch hit walk, and advanced to third on a single by Mike Collins. Lyons got Edwin Bellorin to ground out to end the game and a 12-game road trip for Tennessee.
The Smokies return home to host Orlando Thursday night at Smokies Park. Josh Axelson (2-2, 2.34) will start against Bartolome Fortunato (4-2, 2.40).
