Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Birmingham Barons fell behind big but came roaring back as they defeated the Chattanooga Lookouts 9-7 in front of 1,855 fans on Sunday evening at the Hoover Met. Huntsville beat out Mobile 5-2 to keep pace with the Barons and stay a half game behind Birmingham in the Western Division.

With the Lookouts up 3-2 going into the sixth inning, Chattanooga took advantage of two errors and three hits to score four runs and take a 7-2 lead off of reliever Jim Bullard. Ed Encarnacion and Guye Senjem each had RBI's in the inning and three of the runs off Bullard (4-3) were unearned.

With a seemingly dominating lead going into the bottom of the sixth, the Lookouts ran into the Barons scorching offense. Down five runs, Birmingham struck back with six of their own as they batted around to take a shocking 8-7 lead. Steve Morales started the scoring with a RBI single and Danny Sandoval drove in a run on a fielder's choice before the floodgates opened up. Three straight doubles by Juan Piniella, Jeremy Reed and Gabe Alvarez pushed across four more runs to give the Barons the lead for good and make a winner of Bullard.

Alvarez added a sacrifice fly RBI in the eighth to give Birmingham a little breathing space and Jeff Bajenaru followed Jason Stumm's and Ryan Meaux's scoreless innings of relief with one of his own in the ninth to register his 12th save of the season. Bobby Bevel (2-1) took the loss for Chattanooga in relief after giving up two runs on four hits in 2.1 innings.

The Barons look for the sweep of the four-game series tomorrow as they send out LHP Byeong An (4-2, 4.12) to face RHP Ryan Mottl (5-4, 3.41). All the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
