Mississippi Braves News Release

Pearl, MS- In the final game of a five game series, the Tennessee Smokies had no problem with the Mississippi Braves as they cruised to a 10-5 victory. The Smokies were able to score seven runs in their first three at-bats and wouldn't look back the rest of the night. The Braves were defeated four times in five games and were outscored (37-20).

After a thirty-two minute rain delay, Tim Gustafson got the start for Mississippi and walked the first four batters of the game. A Robinson Chirinos sac-fly brought in Brett Jackson to make the score 1-0 after a half inning. Mississippi answered that run in the bottom of the 1st when Antoan Richardson scored on a wild pitch from Rafael Dolis. With the score tied at one, the game went into the 2nd inning.

In the top of the 2nd inning, Gustafson gave up a two-out triple to pitcher, Rafael Dolis to start a rally. The next four batters would deliver base hits to score three runs in the inning. Tony Campana, Brett Jackson and Blake Lalli collected RBI's and the Smokies took 4-1 lead into the 3rd. Tennessee scored three more runs in the 3rd as two were on when Tony Thomas came up to the plate and slammed his 8th home run of the season. It was Thomas' 2nd homer in as many nights. Tennessee then took a 7-1 lead.

The Braves had their biggest inning in the 5th by sending six batters to the plate and scoring twice. Tyler Pasternicky reached on a throwing error, which set up Willie Cabera. Cabrera proceeded to belt his first triple of the season and score Pasternicky. Mauro Gomez came up two batters later and tripled in Cabrera to make the score 7-3, Tennessee. It was the second triple of the season for Gomez.

In the 8th, Mississippi pulled a little closer by scoring one run. Mauro Goemz singled to lead off the inning and eventually scored on an error. This cut the lead down to three runs for Tennessee, but they came up in the 9th and were able to strike back. The Smokies scored three runs off of Jaye Chapman, only one of them was earned. With the score 10-4, the Braves came to the plate in the bottom of the 9th and managed to scrape together one run and lost 10-5.

Tomorrow, Mississippi will be off and will travel to Huntsville, AL. A five games series will start Wednesday night at Joe W. Davis Stadium. The Braves will send RHP Julio Teheran (0-0; 0.00) to the mound for his AA debut. The Stars will roll out RHP Michael Bowman (7-8; 5.74). The first pitch is set for 7:00.
