Knoxville Smokies News Release

KODAK, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies, Class AA minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announce this afternoon that 3B Josh Vitters has been placed on the disabled list with a broken left hand. No corresponding move has been made at the moment, putting the Smokies roster at 23 active players for tonight's series finale in Mississippi against the Braves.

Vitters, the Cubs' first-round pick (third overall) in the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft, left the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Braves after being hit in the hand by a pitch in the fifth inning. Leading up to the injury, he was hitting .223 (46-for-206) in 63 games for the Smokies after being called up from High-A Daytona in early May. The Anaheim, Calif. native also clubbed seven home runs and drove in 26 for Tennessee.
