Smokies Begin Twelve-Game Road Trip Friday

Sevierville, Tenn. - Tennessee (27-18) came from behind in the eighth inning for a 5-4 win over Carolina (24-19), Thursday night in front of 3,210 fans at Smokies Park. The Smokies take a two game lead over the Mudcats for the Southern League, Eastern Division lead. Mike Lyons came in the ninth inning, struck out two to claim the franchise record 29th save of the year.

The Smokies began the scoring with 3 runs in the second inning against Donnie Bridges of the Mudcats. Bucky Jacobsen was hit by a pitch, and moved to third on an error by first baseman Pat Magness, on a single by Scott Krause. Corey Erickson hit a sacrifice fly that knocked in Jacobsen. Krause scored on a double by Yadier Molina, who scored on a Nick Stocks double.

The Mudcats started off the fourth inning with a single by Billy Hall. Hall scored on a sacrifice fly ball to center by Matt Padgett, to score the first run for the visitors. Carolina added three more runs on a home run by Jesus Medrano in the seventh, knocking in Chip Ambres and Donnie Bridges.

Smokies starter Nick Stocks pitched six and one third innings allowing three runs on three hits, while striking out eight. Reliever Josh Kinney (W, 2-1) earned the win, pitching one and two thirds innings striking out three and giving up one run on one hit.

Yadier Molina went 3-3 with two singles, a double, walk and two RBI's. His RBI single in the eighth inning put the Smokies up 5-4.

The Smokies will travel to Mobile to face the Bay Bears tomorrow in the first of a four game series. Tennessee will send Juan Pena (4-5, 3.46) to face Justin Germano (1-2, 3.42) to start a twelve game road trip. The Smokies will return home on August 21st to face Orlando.
