Mobile BayBears News Release
Huntsville, Ala. â The Mobile BayBears were swept in their double-header by Huntsville Thursday night as the Stars won each game in their final at bat.
In game one, the BayBears had the Stars right where they wanted them. Mobile led Huntsville 2-0 as the game went to the seventh and final inning. However, the Stars scored three runs and won the game, 3-2.
Duncan McAdoo gave up a lead off single to J.J. Hardy and got Cory Hart on a lineout to center. McAdoo was then lifted for BayBears closer Rusty Tucker. Brandon Gemoll greeted Tucker with a first-pitch double, putting runners at second and third. Noochie Varner was then walked intentionally to load the bases. Brad Nelson followed with a grounder to shortstop Danny Bravo, who's throw took first baseman Jon Knott's foot of the bag for an error, allowing the first run to score.
After a strikeout by Tucker, catcher Rico Washington committed a passed ball. Gemoll scored from third to tie the score at 2-2. Chris Barnwell then walked to re-load the bases. Alan Webb then came out of the pen to relieve Tucker, who was being attended to by the BayBears trainer as he left the game. Webb then walked Alejandro Machado to bring in the game-winning run.
The loss wastes a great outing by McAdoo. The BayBears starter threw six and one-third innings, allowing just one run on four base hits while striking out six. Tucker (2-6) took the loss in relief.
The BayBears scored their first run of the game as Jake Gautreau hit a solo homerun, his 12th homer of the year, lading off the fifth inning. Freddy Guzman drove in Vinnie Faison with a two-out single in the top of the seventh, giving the BayBears their supposed insurance run.
In the night's finale, the Stars scored two unearned runs, breaking a 1-1 tie. With runners at the corners, the Stars attempted a suicide squeeze play. Cory Hart, the runner at third, was caught in a run down as the batter missed the bunt. During the run down, Rico Washington's throw hit Hart in the back, allowing him to cross the plate with the go-ahead run. The Stars added another run in the frame to make the final score 3-1.
The BayBears lone run came in the top of the fifth inning. Vinnie Faison drove in Freddie Guzman with a two-out single. The BayBears were limited to three hits in game two.
BayBears starter Chris Rojas took the loss in the night's second game. Rojas (5-8) threw five innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on seven hits, while striking out four.
The BayBears now return home to open up a four-game series against the Tennessee Smokies, the Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. First pitch at Hank Aaron Stadium, Friday night, is set for 7:05.
