Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL â Tommy Nicholson clocked a Will McCrotty fastball over the right field fence in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Birmingham Barons past the Jacksonville Suns in front of 3,377 fans on Thursday evening at the Hoover Met. The win earned the Barons a series split with the Suns and a 4-2 record on the six-game home stand.
Neal Cotts and McCrotty (1-5) both turned in outstanding starts with Cotts throwing six scoreless innings for the Barons and McCrotty tossing seven scoreless before the Nicholson homer. Cotts also struck out seven on the night to move him into second place in the Southern League leaders with 131 punchouts.
Nicholson had only hit five professional home runs in his four years of minor league ball before the game but delivered against McCrotty who had baffled the Barons hitters through seven.
Matt Smith tossed a scoreless seventh before Ryan Meaux (1-1) finished off the eighth and ninth innings to pick up his first Double-A win.
The Barons travel to Chattanooga for a four-game series over the weekend and will send out RHP Enemencio Pacheco (9-2, 2.75) to face LHP John Koronka (7-11, 3.83) in game one. All the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
