With a late rally falling short the Calgary Vipers (51-30) were defeated 7-4 by the Edmonton Capitals (53-30) before 4378 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. With their bats quiet the Vipers fell behind 6-0 after six inning before rallying for four tallies in the seventh inning. Edmonton quickly responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh and snuffed out the comeback attempt. Jesse Smith (2-1) recorded the victory by allowing two runs in six innings while Stephen Whalen (7-5) took the loss by surrendering five walks and allowing four runs in four innings pitched. With the loss Calgary now needs to win two of the final three games against the Capitals in the regular season to claim the North Division pennant.
Edmonton opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning as Enrique Cruz walked, J.D. Closser singled, Brent Metheny knocked in a run with a base hit, Carlos Duncan collected a sacrifice fly, and Rex Rundgren drove in one with a single for a 3-0 advantage.
The Capitals added a run to the lead in the fourth when Matt Rogelstad followed by Cruz walked and with two outs Rogelstad scored on a fielding error for a 4-0 lead.
Two more runs were scored by Edmonton in the sixth frame as Closser singled, Metheny walked, and Duncan doubled in both for a 6-0 advantage.
Calgary got onto the scoreboard in the seventh inning when Drew Miller walked, Al Quintana tripled for a run batted in, Derek Perren walked, Bryan Burke reached on a fielder's choice for a RBI while on the same play Perren was safe at second base after an error, Wilver Perez walked to load the bases, Chad Ehrnsberger singled in one, and C.J. Ziegler knocked in a run with a fielder's choice for a 6-4 score.
The Capitals got a run back in the bottom of the seventh as Rundgren followed by Todd Linden singled and Rundgren scored on a balk for a 7-4 lead.
The Vipers continue this series in Edmonton to finish off the 2011 regular season on Saturday August 27th at 7:00.
The 2011 North American League playoffs will start with Game 1 of the North Division Championship best of seven series in Edmonton at Telus Field against the Capitals on Tuesday August 30th at 7:00. Game 2 of the N.D.C.S. will also be in Edmonton on Wednesday August 31st at 7:00.
The series shifts to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Thursday September 1st at 6:30 for Game 3 and on Friday September 2nd at 6:30 for Game 4. If necessary Game 5 will also be played in Calgary on Saturday September 3rd at 2:30.
If a Game 6 is necessary it will be back in Edmonton on Sunday September 4th at 2:00.
If a Game 7 is necessary it will take place on Tuesday September 6th at whichever team finishes the regular season in first place.
