Smith nabs Defensive Player of the Week honors
February 10, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Feb. 10, 2004) â Defensive Specialist Omarr Smith wasted little time making an impact in his first game back with the San Jose SaberCats, earning ADT Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors for Week One of the 2004 Arena Football League season.
Returning to the SaberCats after spending the 2003 season with the Tampa Bay Storm, the Arena Bowl XVI Ironman set career highs with five assisted tackles and five pass breakups, as well as his 15th career interception in the fourth quarter to seal the SaberCats' 58-43 season-opening win over the Detroit Fury February 5th.
Smith, a fifth-year veteran, posted 6.5 tackles overall to finish second among San Jose defenders. He recorded three of his five pass breakups on consecutive plays in the fourth quarter, allowing San Jose to take the ball over on downs.
This marks the first time that the former San Jose State Spartan has garnered an AFL weekly honor.
Smith spent his first three Arena Football League seasons with the SaberCats before signing with Tampa Bay in 2003, where he was runner up to current teammate, Clevan Thomas, in ADT Defensive Player-of-the-Year voting.
Rounding out the Week One AFL award winners, Carolina quarterback, Matt Nagy was named the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player-of-the-Week after connecting on 28-of-39 passes for 282 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions in the Cobras' 67-41 victory over Dallas on Sunday. The victory ended a 17-game losing streak for the Cobras.
New York Dragons' WR/DB, Will Holder, was named Week One's U.S. Army Ironman with a great two-way performance in a 54-28 victory over the Georgia Force on Sunday. Holder recorded six receptions for 85 yards and two touchdowns, while recording 4.5 tackles and an interception on defense.
The SaberCats return to action Sunday, February 22nd, in Los Angeles to take on the division rival Avengers on NBC at 12:00pm. San Jose opens their home schedule, Saturday, February 28th against the Grand Rapids Rampage at HP Pavilion at 7:30pm. Single game tickets for all home games can be purchased at all Northern California TicketMaster outlets, on-line at www.ticketmaster.com, or in person at the HP Pavilion box office. For season or group ticket information call the SaberCats at (408) 573-5577 or visit the team's official website at www.sanjosesabercats.com.
