Carolina's Nagy, San Jose's Smith and New York's Holder earn week one honors

NEW YORK – Carolina Cobras quarterback MATT NAGY, San Jose SaberCats defensive specialist OMARR SMITH and New York Dragons wide receiver/defensive back WILL HOLDER have been named Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player and U.S. Army Ironman of the Week, respectively, for Week 1 of the 2004 season.

Nagy (6-1, 210, Delaware), a second-year signal-caller, connected on 28-of-39 passes for 282 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. Three of his scoring strikes were delivered to offensive specialist TODD DOXZON. Nagy also rushed for a touchdown in the Carolina Cobras' 67-41 victory over the Dallas Desperados on Sunday. The victory ended a 17-game losing streak for the Cobras. This marks the first time that the former Blue Hen has earned an AFL weekly honor.

Smith (5-10, 185, San Jose State), a fourth-year defensive specialist, led one of the AFL's top defenses with 6.5 tackles – including a career-high five assists – and posted a career-high five pass breakups, the second highest total in team game history. Smith also tallied his 15th career interception in the SaberCats 58-43 victory over the Detroit Fury on Thursday. This marks the first time that the former Spartan has garnered an AFL weekly honor.

Holder (6-0, 192, Monmouth), a second-year standout, guided the Dragons with a great two-way performance to a 54-28 victory over the Georgia Force on Sunday. Holder recorded six receptions for 85 yards and two touchdowns, while recording 4.5 tackles and an interception on defense. On three consecutive plays in the fourth quarter, Holder caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from AARON GARCIA, made a touchdown-saving tackle on special teams and then intercepted a pass on defense. This marks the first time that the former Hawk has earned an AFL weekly honor.

Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Chicago's Raymond Philyaw; Colorado's Damian Harrell, Indiana's Brett Bech, Los Angeles' Chris Jackson, New Orleans' Aaron Bailey, New York's Aaron Garcia, San Jose's Mark Grieb and Tampa Bay's Shane Stafford.

ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Bryan Henderson, Carolina's Damon Mason, Chicago's Corey Sawyer, Colorado's Ahmad Hawkins, Indiana's Anthony Derricks, New York's Will Holder New Orleans' Monty Montgomery, and Tampa Bay's Shea Showers.

U.S. Army Ironman of the Week candidates included: Carolina's Travis Reece, Chicago's Lindsay Fleshman, Colorado's Kevin McKenzie, Columbus' Sedrick Robinson, Detroit's Cameron Chance, Georgia's Andy McCullough, Los Angeles' Kevin Ingram, Philadelphia's Keita Crespina and Tampa Bay's T.T. Toliver
