Nagy Named AFL Offensive Player of the Week
February 10, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Carolina Cobras News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC â The Arena Football League today announced that Carolina Cobras quarterback Matt Nagy has been named the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the club's victory over the Dallas Desperados on February 8. The second-year quarterback completed 28-of-39 passes for 282 yards and six touchdowns and added a four-yard rushing score in the Cobras' 67-41 win at Dallas in the 2004 season opener.
"This is a great award and a great honor," said Nagy. "I couldn't have done it without the line blocking and the wide outs making spectacular catches. I really believe that the most important thing is that we got the victory and all of the individual awards are secondary."
The former University of Delaware standout led the Cobras to their highest point total since a 72-64 victory over the Grand Rapids Rampage in the 2002 postseason (7/28). The victory also ended the Cobras franchise and league-record losing streak at 17 games.
"We are all very proud of Matt (Nagy)," said Cobras Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Eddie Khayat. "He has all the attributes that you look for in a successful quarterback, especially toughness. He had an outstanding performance against Dallas and I am sure there will be many more down the road."
Nagy is in his first season with the Cobras after being acquired in an offseason trade with the New York Dragons. Prior to missing the entire 2003 campaign due to a knee injury, he previously appeared in seven games during the 2002 season with the Dragons. This is the first time the former Blue Hen has earned the weekly honor.
Nagy and the Cobras hit the road for the second contest of the season as they square off with the Columbus Destroyers on Friday, February 13 at Nationwide Arena. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Carolina will open their home schedule on Saturday, February 21 at the Charlotte Coliseum versus the Arizona Rattlers. Single-game, season and group tickets are on sale now. For more information, call 877-4-COBRAS or visit www.cobrasfootball.com.
