November 10, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Moose Jaw, SK - Both teams showed their speed and skill but just the one mark from the visiting Tigers as Andrew Basha (Calgary, AB) would beat Warriors starter Jackson Unger for his 6th of the season at 4:15 of the opening period from Tomas Mrsic.
Tigers starting goaltender Evan May (Nanaimo, BC) would make 10 saves in the opening period, while a crucial blocked shot from Denton Mateychuk by Hunter St.Martin (Edmonton, AB) would all be ingredients in the Tigers keeping the 1-0 lead to the 1st intermission.
Into the second period as the Warrior power play carried over to the 2nd and they'd finally solve Evan May as Brayden Schuurman would beat the Tigers goaltender just 51 seconds into the frame. Moose Jaw carried most of the play in the 2nd but May wouldn't let another puck pass making 16 saves in the period to keep things square at 1-1.
Into the third period the Tigers would outshoot the Warriors 11-8 but couldn't solve Jackson Unger, while both teams would end up with at least one point as the 1-1 game would carry over, to the 5th overtime of the season for the Tigers.
Despite getting five shots in OT, Moose Jaw would get a very late power play with less than 30 seconds left in overtime and Rhett Parsons (Cremona, AB) would block two key shots to force a shootout that would go five rounds.
Rounds 1-3 would see no goals from either club before Lynden Lakovic would give the Warriors the advantage in round four. But Cayden Lindstrom (Chetwynd, BC) would come through in the clutch to force round five. After an Atley Calvert miss, Shane Smith (Cessford, AB) would score his second shootout winner of his career giving the Tigers their 12th win of the season in a 2-1 decision at the Moose Jaw Events Centre Friday night.
Moose Jaw would out-shoot the Tigers 35-29, while the Tigers were 0/3 on the power play and the penalty kill would go 3/4.
Next up for the Tigers, a home meeting against the Wenatchee Wild Saturday.
