Wheat Kings Need Work Boots for Weekend Series with Regina
November 10, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
The Brandon Wheat Kings know full well they'll have to be ready to work when they face the Regina Pats in a two-game home-and-home series on November 11 and 12. Just over a week ago, they got a demonstration of the kind of mentality the Pats bring.
Though they heavily outshot the Pats in their meeting on November 3, the Wheat Kings fell 6-1 to their rivals in Regina. With the Eastern Conference standings not seeming to get any less congested anytime soon, the boys in black and gold know they'll need to make these games count.
"We have to match their work ethic," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "They're a hard working team and, one through twenty, they compete and they're in your face. We have to be ready for that and match their work ethic and hopefully capitalize on some opportunities to score."
Getting better looks around the net was a theme of the conversations the Wheat Kings had this week, because even though they put up 34 shots in Regina they still felt they had a hard time getting to the high slot, the crease, and other high-danger areas. It was an area the team seemed to improve on against the Moose Jaw Warriors on November 9.
"I still think there's some work to do there," Murray said. "When we score, you look at where they come from and a lot of it comes from inside the hashmarks. That was a classic case with (Nolan) Flamand's game-tying goal. He stops at the net, he gets to the hard areas, and the puck ends up on his stick. It's a place you've got to go to get rewarded."
The Wheat Kings have faced the Pats twice this season, including the 7-6 overtime thriller on opening night. With the Pats taking both contests so far, this weekend represents a great chance to take some crucial points back in the standings. Entering action on Saturday, the Wheat Kings have 19 points on the season to Regina's 20.
Interestingly, both games this weekend will be afternoon affairs. The contest in Brandon on November 11 will include a ceremonial puck drop and a moment of silence in honour of Remembrance Day. Puck drop is 3:00.
