Slugfest Comes to Screeching Halt

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - A regulation baseball game is played in nine innings but on Sunday afternoon at Four Winds Field it felt like it was played in five. A combination of 14 runs and 16 hits between the Great Lakes Loons and South Bend Cubs made for an exciting first five frames and after both staffs faced the minimum in the final four, the Cubs came away with an 8-6 win.

The Loons started the scoring with three runs in the first inning while pushing Cubs starter Riley Thompson from the game after recording just one out. Thompson went to the dugout after throwing 31 pitches to just four batters.

Great Lakes continued to make the most of their at-bats by forcing the next Cubs pitcher, Fauris Guerrero, to throw 63 pitches in just two 2/3 innings while scoring three more runs in the second inning. The biggest hit for the Loons came from Leonel Valera who finished with two triples in the game becoming the ninth player in franchise history to accomplish that feat.

South Bend waited until the fourth inning to start fighting back. After Loons starter Ryan Pepiot departed after a scheduled two innings, Zach Willeman entered and the Cubs took advantage. Willeman (L, 2-4) allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and three walks.

After all the scoring took place in the first five innings, the combination of Carlos Vega (W, 1-0) and Brian Golwicki (S, 5) allowed South Bend to face the minimum amount of Loons hitters down the stretch. Vegas tossed four, one-hit innings with just 43 pitches. Meanwhile, the combination of Jasiel Alvino and Justin Hagenman allowed the Loons to do the same against the Cubs.

The Loons took game one. The Cubs took game two. Game three is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EDT on Monday night.
