Cedar Rapids Blows out Burlington

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels cruised to a 12-4 win Sunday against the Burlington Bees in front of 2,865 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Sunday's victory was the seventh consecutive win for the Kernels (25-17, 64-48) against the Bees (15-27, 54-58) dating back to May. Cedar Rapids holds a 2-0 lead in this four-game series and a 12-4 edge within the season series.

The Kernels jumped in front, 4-0, during the second inning. Spencer Steer's bases-loaded walk drove in Alex Isola. Gilberto Celestino batted next and cleared the bases with an RBI double that plated Jared Akins, Tyler Webb, and Steer.

Burlington quickly answered within the third and trimmed its deficit to 4-1. Ryan Vega collected a leadoff single before advancing on a walk and a double play. Livan Soto's two-out single allowed Vega to score from third base.

Albee Weiss launched Cedar Rapids to a 7-1 advantage in the fifth inning. Weiss hit a three-run home run to left-center field for his third round-tripper with the Kernels.

The Bees scored their next run during the sixth. Francisco Del Valle's RBI double brought in Soto, but Burlington would leave the bases loaded in back-to-back innings while Cedar Rapids protected their 7-2 lead.

A five-run eighth inning pushed the edge to 12-2 Kernels. Webb's two-run homer was his second blast this season and the team's league-high 91st total home run. Wander Javier added a two-run double and later scored on Yunior Severino's RBI single.

Kevin Maitan capped Sunday's scoring in the top of the ninth. Soto extended the game with a two-out single, and Maitan followed with a two-run home run that sliced the final difference to 12-4.

Tyler Palm (3-7) held the Bees to two runs over 5.2 innings pitched and earned the victory. Rickey Ramirez provided scoreless work in the sixth and seventh innings for his first hold of the year. Clayton Chatham (0-2) was tagged for five runs in 4.1 innings within a losing decision.

When the series resumes Monday evening, Kernels right-hander Andrew Cabezas (4-6, 3.93) will face Bees right-hander Kyle Tyler (6-1, 2.83). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m., and Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will call the game on 1450 KMRY AM and 93.1 KMRY FM and also online at www.kmryradio.com, www.kernels.com, and MiLB.TV.

Mark Down Monday allows fans to purchase regular hot dogs for $1.50 each. Also, small popcorn, ice cream sandwiches, and chips are only $1.00 apiece.

Fans can purchase tickets for all Cedar Rapids Kernels home games by visiting www.kernels.com, going to the Kernels Ticket Office, or calling (319) 896-7560. The Kernels Ticket Office is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays. On Sundays when the Kernels have a home game, the Kernels Ticket Office will open at 11:00 a.m.
