Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, FL (May 10, 2006) - Matt Garza isn't the only dominating pitcher on the Fort Myers Miracle starting staff. Kevin Slowey is making a name for himself and fast. The right hander tossed another gem and the Miracle got just enough runs to defeat the Daytona Cubs 2-1 at Hammond Stadium on Wednesday night.

Slowey tossed 6.0 shutout innings allowing just two hits, both to Charlotte High graduate Nate Spears, and striking out nine. Slowey threw 94 pitches, 64 for strikes and got out of the only two jams he got himself into. In the first he hit Sam Fuld to lead off the ballgame. Spears reached on a bunt single to put runners at first and second and nobody out. Slowey got Aaron Weston to fly out to center, Jake Fox on strikes and then catcher Korey Feiner picked off Fuld at second to end the inning.

Slowey got into a little trouble in the sixth. With one out Alan Rick reached on a two base error when shortstop Alexi Casilla dropped a pop up. Slowey got Issmael Salas to ground out and after hitting Spears retired Weston on a fielders choice.

The Miracle, who improved to 19-14, took a 1-0 lead in the third. Feiner walked and with two outs Matt Tolbert ripped an RBI triple to left center.

Tolbert was involved in the second run of the game for the Miracle. In the sixth he led off with a bunt single. He advanced to third on a wild pickoff attempt by pitcher Mark Holliman. One batter later he scored on Brock Peterson's sacrifice fly.

Danny Powers tossed the seventh and eighth allowing just a solo homer off the bat of Matt Craig. He struck out three in his two innings.

JP Martinez closed it out. He gave up a lead off single to Spears, but struck out Weston. After an infield single by Fox put runners at first and second, Martinez notched his sixth save by striking out Craig and Jemel Spearman to end the game.

The same two teams meet Thursday night at Hammond Stadium beginning at 7:05 p.m.. The Miracle send LHP Kyle Aselton (2-1, 3.30) to the hill against Cubs RHP Grant Johnson (3-3, 5.40). The game can be heard live on Sports Radio 770 with the pre game show at 6:45 p.m. It is Glazed and Confused night at the ballpark, a salute to overindulgence when you get that glazed over look after you have eaten way too much.
