Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach, FL) - The Vero Beach Dodgers tied the Lakeland Tigers in the 9th inning, but lost 4-3 in 13 Wednesday night at Holman Stadium. Scott Elbert threw six innings of one-hit ball, but did not figure in the decision for the Dodgers. The series continues with a 7:00 PM game on Thirsty Thursday.

Elbert allowed only one run in the 3rd inning. He walked Chris Robinson to start the inning. Nick McIntyre then grounded a ball to second that looked like a sure double play. However it was mishandled and advanced Robinson to third. The next batter did ground into a double play, but that scored the lead run for Lakeland.

The Dodgers tied it in the 5th when Jamie Hoffman drew a leadoff walk. An errant pickoff throw advanced him to second and he took third on a ground out. Hoffman scored when a grounder by Blake DeWitt was booted.

Lakeland regained the lead when Wilkin Ramirez led off the 7th with a homer against reliever Brian Akin.

Vero Beach nearly won it in the 9th. Cole Bruce pinch-hit a single to right field. Ryan Carter laid down a bunt that was throw away and Xavier Paul was intentionally walked to load the bases. Hoffmann then walked to bring in the tying run and keep the bases loaded with no outs. However, reliever Jeff Hahn struck out the next two hitters and got DeWitt to line out to right field to send it to extra innings.

Dodgers reliever Kyle Wilson held Lakeland scoreless for four innings that included six strikeouts. But in the 13th against Ramon Troncoso, Gilberto Mejia reached on an infield single. He was sacrificed to second and Jeff Frazier doubled him in to make it 3-2. Frazier later scored on a 2-out single to give the Tigers a 2-run lead.

In the bottom of the 13th, Carter led off with a single and went to second on Paul's grount out. One out later, Chris Westervelt singled to score Carter and make it a one-run game. Reliever Eddie Bonine coaxed a ground out to end the game and notch his first win of the season.
