Down East Wood Ducks News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Wood Ducks (30-25) battled for the final three innings in a 6-2 defeat to the Pelicans (26-29). Matt Whatley stayed hot with the bat and had his third multi-hit game of the season as the Woodies collected five of their six hits in the final third of the game.

Myrtle Beach starter Keegan Thompson faced the minimum through the first six innings by inducing double plays in the second and third innings. Whatley had the first hit off of the right-hander in the third inning.

Steven Bruce had the start for the Woodies and he worked into the sixth inning. He allowed two runs and did not issue a walk in the defeat. One strange caveat from Saturday's game was the lack of a strikeout for the Wood Ducks' pitching staff. None of the four pitchers who entered could register a K.

In the seventh, the Woodies formed a rally by loading the bases with one out to chase Thompson from the game. Chuck Leblanc would hit a deep fly ball to center to score Franklin Rollin, but the Pelicans doubled-off Alex Kowalczyk attempting to advance to second.

The bottom of the seventh featured two unearned runs for the Pelicans off of Kaleb Fontenot in a four-run frame. It would ultimately put the game out of reach for the Woodies.

The silver lining of the night was Buies Creek falling at home to Potomac, meaning the Wood Ducks do not lose any ground in the race for the first half title. The finale of the series is at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday with right-hander Emerson Martinez (3-4, 4.44) facing Tyson Miller (4-4, 3.97).
