Regina, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (0-4-0-0) gave up two goals in 14 seconds in the opening frame against the Brandon Wheat Kings (2-1-1-0) Thursday night, and while they pushed back hard afterwards, the two goals were all Brandon needed in a 4-1 win.
Nolan Ritchie opened the scoring 7:29 into the first on the power play. Skating in from the left side in the Broncos zone, Ritchie's shot from the circle beat Isaac Poulter to give the Wheat Kings the lead.
Off the next faceoff, a stretch pass through centre was picked off by Brandon, and Ritchie threw the puck across the Broncos zone off the rush for Lynden McCallum who tipped it over Poulter's glove to push the lead to 2-0.
After the two goals the Broncos settled down and generated plenty of chances for themselves, eventually outshooting the Wheat Kings 16-15 after 20 minutes.
Michael Farren cut into Brandon's lead before the period was up, redirecting a slap shot from Alex Moar on the power play for his third goal in as many games to make the game 2-1 heading into the second.
The score remained 2-1 well into the third before the Wheat Kings struck again. Reid Perepeluk stole the puck in the neutral zone while shorthanded and beat Poulter over the glove off the rush to push Brandon's lead to 3-1.
The Broncos pulled Poulter for the extra attacker late, but couldn't get another puck past Ethan Kruger before Ritchie hit the empty net on a breakaway.
Swift Current is back in action Saturday afternoon for a 4:00 start against the Moose Jaw Warriors (3-1-0-0).
