Slippery Rock Selects Nine in Expansion Draft

Marion, IL - The team may not have a name yet, but the new Slippery Rock Professional Baseball team has it's first batch of players, as nine were selected in the Frontier League's expansion draft this evening. Slippery Rock has acquired the contract rights to the following players:

- Cameron Cheek - RHP - 4-2, 3.63 ERA in 29 games for the River City Rascals; 14-5, 1.78 ERA in two years at SIU-Edwardsville; 9th lowest ERA in D-II in 2006 (1.59)

- Kory Bucklew - RHP - 1-0, 1 sv, 3.62 ERA in 17 games for the Traverse City Beach Bums in 2006 after going 4-2, 4 sv, 3.05 ERA at Ball State University in the spring

- Caleb McConnell - RHP - 2-1, 4.01 ERA in six games for the River City Rascals; 5-2, 3.47 ERA for Western Carolina University in 2005

- Jason Arrowood - C - a Frontier League All-Star in 2006, he hit .263 in 67 games for the Gateway Grizzlies after hitting .394 for Northeastern (OK) State in 2005

- Ben Lovell - RHP - 4-5, 3.97 ERA in 25 games between the Chillicothe Paints and Florence Freedom

- Jason Bucholtz - 2B - hit .257, 34 rbi, 14 sb in 68 games for Washington Wild Things; .284, 15 2b, 20 sb for Ball State University in 2005

- Bryan Vickers - C - hit .263 in 18 games for the Joliet Jackhammers and Rockford RiverHawks in 2006; hit .293 with 49 doubles, 42 home runs, and 156 RBI during his career at Wright State University, including .342 with 16 hr, 43 RBI in 2004

- Jon Hickey - SS - hit .125 in six games for Evansville Otters; hit .285 for Eastern Illinois University in 2005

- Brian Baxter - RHP - 1-1, 5.40 ERA in four games (three starts) for Windy City; 7-3, 6 sv, 2.66 ERA for Newman (KS) University in 2006, 1st Team NAIA All-Region

"Along with forming the basis for a pitching staff, we also wanted to target catchers and middle infielders, as those are the two toughest positions to fill in the Frontier League," commented Slippery Rock general manager Steve Tahsler.

While Slippery Rock Professional Baseball now holds the contract rights to these players, they must agree to terms for 2007 to be placed on the 35-man training camp roster and then make the opening day 24-man roster.
