Slim Lead Slips Away in Loss to Clearwater

Bradenton Marauders News Release

BRADENTON, Fla. - The Marauders led Tuesday night's game after seven innings but saw the lead disappear in the eighth inning in a 4-2 loss to the Clearwater Threshers at LECOM Park.

The loss was the first for the Marauders (23-29) in a game in which they led after seven innings. The team has also lost six straight series openers, dating back to a loss to Tampa on May 3.

With the Marauders leading, 2-1, Jack Hartman (0-1) entered the game to start the eighth inning. The right-hander allowed a game-tying solo home run to Jadiel Sanchez, and after a one-out walk, surrendered a go-ahead RBI-single to Arturo de Freitas. Sanchez would add an RBI-double for an insurance run in the ninth for a 4-2 Threshers (27-24) lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Wyatt Hendrie reached on a fielding error to bring the tying run to the plate for the Marauders. After Norkis Marcos struck out, Clearwater right-hander Rodolfo Sanchez grazed Luke Brown with a pitch, placing the go-ahead run on first with one out. But Sergio Campana and Deivis Nadal struck out, ending the game.

The Marauders went just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded a total of nine baserunners.

The loss overshadowed solid Marauders pitching performances by minor league rehabber Aaron Shortridge and Valentin Linarez. Shortridge tossed three scoreless innings and threw out a baserunner on an early steal, and Linarez struck out five across four innings, allowing just one run and stranding four baserunners.

Bradenton scored first in the game when Rodolfo Nolasco drilled an RBI-triple off the left-center field wall in the third to score Brown, who had led off the inning with a walk. But in the top of the fourth, Clearwater tied the score on an RBI-double by Leandro Pineda.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Marauders regained the lead. Campana walked and later scored from third base when Jase Bowen beat out a two-out infield single, giving Bradenton a 2-1 lead. Linarez would hold the lead over the next two innings before the bullpen's struggles allowed Clearwater to grab the lead.

The Marauders left a runner stranded in scoring position in four separate innings, including after Nolasco's triple and the aforementioned ninth-inning threat. Bradenton also left Grant Koch stranded in both the second and fourth innings, when he earned his way abord via a walk and a hit-by-pitch, respectively.

Starter Eiberson Castellano and reliever Carlos Betancourt were touched for one run each for Clearwater, but relievers Jordan Fowler (1-0), Konnor Ash, and Sanchez held the Marauders scoreless over their final four innings.

The series continues Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at LECOM Park. RHP Joelvis del Rosario (3-1, 2.78 ERA) will start for the Marauders against LHP Gabriel Cotto (1-1, 4.64 ERA) for Clearwater.
