
Slammers Win Big over Rival Schaumburg

Schaumburg, IL- The Joliet Slammers (13-21) put 26 runners on base in their 11-6 rout of the Schaumburg Boomers (15-19) on Tuesday afternoon.
Boomers starter Anthony Gomez struggled to find the strike zone in the second inning. The first three batters in the inning, LF Phil Bates, SS Alfredo Rodriguez and catcher Jack Cleary, all walked. 2B Max Casper singled to right to drive in a pair. CF Charlie White rolled a bunt single up the third base line to reload the bases. With new pitcher Zach Wendorf in, 1B Nate Roberts walked, scoring a run. 3B Mike Garza also took four out of the zone scoring another run. The Slammers scored four runs in the second inning without hitting the ball out of the infield.
A home run by CF Alexi Colon off pitcher Aaron Vaughn in the second inning made it 4-1. The Slammers added three more runs in the fourth. 3B Mike Garza singled and with two outs LF Phil Bates cracked fly ball to right field. The ball was misplayed by RF Craig Massey, allowing Garza to come around from first to score. Bates made it to third on the play. Rodriguez drove him in and later scored on a Casper single. The Slammers led 7-1 after the top of the third.
The Boomers came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Massey walked to lead off and 3B Joel Hutter was hit by a pitch. SS Mike Schultz drove in Massey with a single and after Colon walked with two outs, pitcher Kevin McNorton relived Vaughn. DH Sam Lind singled to drive in two and catcher Michael Valadez knocked home a run with a sacrifice fly. The Slammers led 7-5 after four innings.
Joliet added a run in the fifth against pitcher Evan Boyd. Roberts walked to lead off. Garza moved him to second and Roberts reached third as the SS Mike Schulze misplayed a groundball. He came into score on an RBI single by the RF Casey Fletcher, extending the Slammers lead to 8-5.
After the Boomers answered with a run in the fifth, the Slammers scored two more in the seventh. With LF JD Williams on first base, Alfredo Rodriguez doubled to put runners at second and third. With two outs, Cleary singled up the middle to drive in two giving Joliet a 10-6 lead after seven.
The Slammers padded their lead with a run in the eighth. Garza reached second on a two-out double. DH Russell Moldenhauer drove him in with an RBI single, giving the Slammers an 11-6 lead.
That would ultimately be the final score as the Slammers bullpen shut down the Boomers over the final four innings. David Kubiak, Sam Moore and Adam Giacalone combined to pitch five innings out of the pen without giving up an earned run. Kubiak (2-3) earned the victory, tossing 3 2/3 innings giving up no earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three.
Notes: Max Casper recorded his first three hit game of the season...27 Slammers batted in the first four innings...Charlie White batted in each of the first four innings...Joliet's 11 runs is tied for the second most they've scored this year... Five Slammers walked in the second inning...Six Slammers recorded multi-hit games... Joliet is back in action on Wednesday night against the Boomers with the first pitch at 7:05pmCT.
