Marion, Ill. (June 23, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners fell 8-5 to the Traverse City Beach Bums on Tuesday night by a final score of 8-5 at Rent One Park in the opening game of a three-game series.

Sloppy play in the field cost the Miners in the early going, as they made three errors that led to five unearned runs in a six-run second inning for the visitors, who led 6-0 before the Miners were able to strike for all five of their runs in the next two frames off of starting pitcher Alex Phillips. After Frank Martinez singled, Jerrud Sabourin hit a double that went all the way to the wall to score him from first to make it 6-1.

The Miners then knocked Phillips out by scoring four more times without making a single out in the third. Ryan DiMascio and Aaron Gates both hit singles before Michael Earley doubled them both home to make it 6-3. Niko Vasquez continued his power tear with a two-run homer, his fourth long ball in five games, to bring the Miners back within a run at 6-5.

But Traverse City would score two more times in the fourth inning for the final margin. Former Miner Jay Austin tripled with one out off of Matt Bywater (6-1) and scored on a sacrifice fly before a solo homer by Jose Vargas made it 8-5. Southern Illinois only got one baserunner the rest of the way against the Traverse City bullpen, led by Michael Shreves (3-0), who pitched five innings of scoreless relief and retired the final 15 batters he faced. The Miners' bullpen, led by four scoreless innings from Brandon Cowan, held the line for the Miners, but the team could get no closer.

The Miners will look to even the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m., starting Adam Lopez against the Beach Bums' Luis DeJesus.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions.
