Joliet Slammers News Release

The Slammers would get on the board first in tonight's game thanks to back-to-back doubles from Jared Morello and Dash Winningham. Morello missed a homerun by about an inch as the ball hit the yellow line on the fence. Slammers led 1-0 after the 1st inning.

After cruising through the first 4 innings, Keegan Long ran into some trouble in the 5th. He allowed the first two hitters to reach base via a walk and single, then gave up a 2-run double to David Cronin. Cronin also scored in the inning giving Evansville a 3-1 lead.

The Slammers were able to get a run back in the bottom half of the 5th inning. Clayton Harp led the inning off with a double in the right-center field gap, moved to third on a single from London Lindley, then scored thanks to a sacrifice fly from Chaz Meadows. Slammers trailed 3-2 after 5.

After watching Evansville add another run in the 6th inning, the Slammers showed great resilience in their half of the 6th. Trailing 4-2, Riley Krane led off with a single, Harrison Bragg followed him with a double, then they both scored thanks to RBI's from Peyton Isaacson and Jimmy Roche to tie the game at 4.

Just like the 6th inning, the Slammers scored 2 more runs in the 7th. Jared Morello reached base with a walk, Dash Winningham followed up with a double down the left field line, then Riley Krane brought them both home with a single up the middle giving the Slammers a 6-4 lead. They would add another insurance run in the 8th after Chaz Meadows collected his 2nd RBI of the night on a sacrifice fly, pushing the lead to 7-4.

Keegan Long didn't have the greatest outing but he was able to keep the Slammers within striking distance. Long pitched 6 innings and gave up 4 runs on 6 hits. He did have some command issues as he walked 6 while only striking out 2. Isaac Sanchez came on in relief and was brilliant. Sanchez went 2 innings, struck out 4, and would be rewarded with the win.

Jake Welch pitched 6 innings for the Otters. He allowed 4 runs on 7 hits, struck out 6 and didn't issue a walk. Welch would get a no decision as Drew Beyer, who came on in relief, would be the losing pitcher.

With the win, the Slammers improve to 24-36 and have now won two in a row. The Otters fall to 34-26 with the loss. Game 2 of this series will be Wednesday, July 24th. First pitch is scheduled for 10:05 a.m.

Tonight's Merchants and Manufacturer's Bank Player of the Game is:Riley Krane (2-4, 2 RBI).
