River City Rascals News Release

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The River City Rascals got a tremendous start from Alex Winkelman as they defeated the Washington Wild Things 3-2 in their series opener on Tuesday night. Winkelman (6-2) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on just three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. LJ Kalawaia had three hits, including two doubles, on the night. Closer Jason Zgardowski turned in a five-out save, his seventh of the season, to seal the win.

The Rascals got out to an early 3-0 lead, after a first inning sacrifice fly from Braxton Martinez and a two-run blast from Tanner Murphy in the second. The Wild Things got on the board with a solo shot from Alex Murphy in the bottom of the second. They wouldn't score, or record another hit, until the seventh inning, when Cody Erickson hit another solo homer.

The Rascals bullpen was able to work around several jams, as Anthony Herrera got the team out of the seventh will a runner on base and Zgardowski left three runners stranded over the final two innings of the game.

Wild Things starter Nick Wegmann (3-5) took the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits over six innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Rascals (33-27) and Wild Things (25-36) play the second game of their series tomorrow night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CDT from Wild Things Park. Taylor Ahearn is expected to make the start for the Rascals.
