Joliet Slammers News Release

Joliet, IL The Joliet Slammers (32-46) series opener at Silver Cross Field against the Florence Freedom was rained out, Tuesday night. Storms rolled in just before the scheduled start time and there was even a tornado warning for the area. The game will be made up as part of a Thursday doubleheader that begins at 4pm.

Before the game, Joliet made a host of roster moves. The Slammers acquired Carter Bell from the Washington Wild Things for a player to be named later. They also signed Jeremy Nowak, who had just been released by Evansville. The team also released 1B Carlos Lopez and the roster stands at 24.

Bell, the versatile Canadian, from Victoria, B.C., can play 1B, SS and 3B. He was selected out of high school in the 22nd round of the 2008 draft by the San Francisco Giants. He elected instead to play college ball at Oregon St. University. He was selected again in the 2011 Draft in the 29th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks. After spending four years with various Class-A clubs, Bell finished last season with the Washington Wild Things in the Frontier League. He started this season in Washington as well before being acquired by the Slammers. Bell has also played professionally in Australia and has played for Team Canada in the World Baseball Championships. He hit .289 for the Wild Things in 88 games in 2014.

Nowak is ideal for the Frontier League as he can play the outfield as well as 1B and 3B. He even pitched in college. He was selected in the 2010 draft in the 13th round out of Mount Olive College in North Carolina. In 2012, Nowak hit .281 with 26 doubles and 44 RBI for High-A Frederick. Despite those numbers, he was released and signed on with a team in the Independent Can-Am League in 2013 and hit .241 over 81 games. Nowak then played all of 2014 with Evansville in the Frontier and hit .265 in 75 games. Nowak hit a school record .446 in 2010 for Mount Olive. Former Slammer Bobby Leeper is 3rd on that list with a .443 avg. in that same season. Nowak spent his first three collegiate seasons at Stoney Brook U. before transferring to Mount Olive.

The home-stand resumes on Wednesday, August 19th at 7:05pm. The game features an appearance by the all-time MLB hit king Pete Rose. He will put on a Slammers uniform to coach the bases for two innings and also sign autographs during the game. Thirsty-Thursday closes out the series. The doubleheader begins at 4pm. Both contests are scheduled for 7 innings. Slammers home action can be seen and heard at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/slammervision
