Slammers Hand Rockford First Loss of Season

Rockford, IL - Behind a season-high fifteen hits the Joliet Slammers (6-4) hand the Rockford Aviators (9-1) their first loss of the season with a 6-4 win.

The Aviators got on top early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first frame. With one out, pitcher Jordan Guth plunked LF Teo Martinez, and after stealing second Martinez was driven in by a single from 2B Tanner Witt. With two outs and Witt on, catcher Ryan Breen blasted a two-run homer over the right field fence, putting Rockford up 3-0 after the first.

The Slammers responded with three runs of their own in the top of the second against hurler Nick Grim. 3B Mike Garza reached on a bloop single to right and SS Alfredo Rodriguez moved him over to third with a line drive through the infield. A base-knock by LF JD Williams drove in Garza and Rodriguez moved to third. He would score on double play off the bat catcher Dante Rosenberg, making it 3-2 Aviators. With two outs, 2B Max Casper turned a slow grounder to center into a hustle double. He would score on a CF Charlie White single up the middle, tying the game at 3-3 after the top half of the second inning.

The Aviators came back with a run in the third. Martinez led off with a single and advanced to third on a base hit by Tanner Witt. He would come around to score on a 1B Devon Rodriguez single to put the Aviators up 4-3.

The Slammers evened the game in the sixth against reliever David Wayne Russo. Rodriguez singled to center and stole second. C Dante Rosenberg singled to score Rodriguez and tie the game at four.

Against hurler Patrick Dolan, the Slammers took the lead in the seventh. RF Phil Bates led off with a double and 1B Chris Serritella drove him in, putting Joliet up 5-4. The Slammers added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Rodriguez again led off with a single and Williams moved him over. Once again Rosenberg came up big with a runner in scoring position, driving in Rodriguez with a single to give the Slammers a 6-4 lead.

Guth and the Slammers pen were dominate following the third inning. Guth pitched six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and four walks while fanning three. Sam Moore came in in relief and tossed a pair of scoreless innings. Navery Moore, after allowing two to reach in the ninth, nailed down the save and the Slammers 6-4 victory.
