College Park Skyhawks News Release

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. - On Thursday afternoon, the Atlanta Hawks Foundation and Vision To Learn, a non-profit provider that grants free eye exams and glasses to students in metro Atlanta, joined together with the College Park Skyhawks to host a rally at Mary M. Bethune Elementary School, where more than 125 students received new eyeglasses of their choice and vision screenings.

"The opportunity to provide children in our community the gift of unimpaired vision is such a blessing," said Hawks Vice President of G League and 2K League Operations Janice Koon. "This event at Bethune Elementary was a wonderful way to give back to kids in our backyard, and we are grateful to Vision to Learn for helping to make it happen."

The event featured members of Skyhawks Entertainment including DJ Mo Hawk, Colli the Hawk, and Southside Crew Dancers. They worked together with volunteers from Vision To Learn to distribute eyeglasses. After receiving their glasses, the students played NBA 2K, participated in a Tik Tok content creation station, a basketball station and more.

"Our partnership with the Hawks and Fulton County Schools allows us to bring vision care directly to the students," said Pete Silberman, Chief Growth Officer of Vision To Learn. "Now, they have the glasses they need to succeed in school and life."

In November 2022, Vision To Learn was featured in the Sunday 'New York Times' as a winner of Nick Kristof's Holiday Impact Prize for their community work.

Children in metro Atlanta go to school every day without the glasses they need to see the board, read a book or participate in the classroom. The primary barrier is a lack of access to vision services for students in low-income communities. To solve this problem, Vision To Learn brings vision services to students at school using mobile clinic vans. The organization coordinates with school site staff and district administrative staff to schedule visits. Students are prescribed glasses and can choose their frames with the guidance of a Vison To Learn optician. All students have a wide selection of fashionable styles and colors to choose from in their size.

"Our BES(T) staff is so appreciative," said Principal of Bethune Elementary School Stanetress Evans. "A third of our student population received glasses today, which will enhance their ability to read, to pay attention, and to learn. We are so appreciative of Vision to Learn and the Skyhawks for being here today."

Since 2017, the Atlanta Hawks Foundation has partnered with Vision To Learn to service schools in metro Atlanta by providing over 14,000 students with eyeglasses and access to free eye exams. In April 2022, the Skyhawks and Vision to Learn hosted a rally at Paul D. West Middle School in East Point, Ga. More than 225 students received new eyeglasses of their choice, books and bookmarks.

The Skyhawks will conclude their home schedule this weekend against the Grand Rapids Gold in a two-game series. The first game is set for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Friday, March 17, with the conclusion of the series set to tip off at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 18. For tickets, visit cpskyhawks.com.
